Actually Ram rated it for 10,800 lbs. No way would it survive a 1,000+ mile trip pulling my enclosed trailer. It was fine with the open trailer though.
Against better knowledge, curiosity got the better of me so I did try to tow with the new 1500.

It did better than the old one, but that's really not saying much. It was still very obvious that the trailer was back there. Yes, the drum was full, so there was a little bit of weight involved. Enough to sag the rear a couple of inches. DSCN4290[1].JPG

It will tow fine with a 24’ enclosed trailer and a 4500 lb car. You just need a load distribution hitch system. It will distribute the load evenly from the rear to the front so that your steering is normal. Otherwise, with too much rear load, your front end and your steering will be lighter. You probably would want to add a trans cooler but it should tow 10000 lbs without trouble.

I used a WD hitch with active anti-sway when towing a 16-foot enclosed trailer, even when empty (or maybe I should say especially when empty) to keep my Ram 2500 crew cab shortbed going straight when passing tractor trailers.

Larger trailer with a lighter tow vehicle? No thanks, that's not for me.

My 28 ATC empty on a windy day is a handful behind the 2500. It would be a catastrophe behind a 1500.

I've given up on bumper pulls, and 2500s.
These days, if I transport a car it's on or in one of these. DSCN2158.JPG DSCN3790.JPG

And yes, that first photo is indeed a 2500. But my girlfriend has since traded for a 3500 longbed.
And this last photo is what towing with a 1500 is like to me. DSCN2255.JPG

My 2500 does fine pulling this with the Charger in it and the gear. If I'm not careful, I'll be doing 80. 20220111_152616.jpg

That was the problem with her 2500. It had 3.42 gears, so you had to do 80 or better to keep it in 6th gear.
But she doesn't want to go nearly as fast with her horse trailer.

And 80 happens to be my preferred speed with my 3500, but that's also at 2,000 rpm. Which it really likes, by the way. Realistically, I should have 4.10s for the weights I pull at times, but then I probably would end up going slower.

Mine has 3.55s. Nice highway gear. My loads are pretty light compared to most.

When did the offer 3.55s?
Either way, when pulling an enclosed trailer, the weight becomes a distant second behind the aero drag.

Top hinged side exit door? Sweet.
Thanks, and yes it is.

As and added bonus, after ordering that trailer four inches taller than stock, the 'Cat's door clears the inside fender, so I don't even have to remove it.

Here you go, Magnified.

This Sundowner lent itself really well to full length E-track as the floor is aluminum profiles.
I could put bolts through the cross members every 12 inches, then rivet all the other holes.

And as luck would have it, after making a decision on the width between them based on the track width of a few vehicles that could be transported in this trailer, it matched the factory tie-downs perfectly.

Looked at regular enclosed gooseneck trailers the other day, but damn...a little 24-footer cost about as much as I paid for this 38-foot living quarters version about three years ago.

When I was looking for mine, they had a 24' Sundowner and it's carrying capacity was less than the cat.

Very nice looking trailer.

Thanks, David.

This one will accommodate a 'Cat, barely. I'm actively looking at air suspension setups for it, and in the process I'll go with 8K axles.

But it sure looks like I'll be making my own air suspension. Nothing out there that I've found so far is attractive to me.

Mine is 12K less trailer weight so I'm good to go, plus it's 28'. A no brainer for me.
