- 2021 Ram TRX
So I had the chance today to spend some time with the new 2021 Ram TRX. I walked away with some good thoughts on the TRX as well as my 2020 Raptor.
Let’s start by addressing the elephant (Hellcat) in the room. The Super Charger and the exhaust simply sound better than what Ford is doing with the current Raptor (I’ll leave the 3rd Gen Raptor out of it for now). The 3.5L EcoPoop just can’t replicate the soundtrack of the TRX.
From there let’s talk about the AWD setup in the TRX. The launch of the line is violent! It’s also impressive for a big truck from 60mph to north of legal speed limits.
The interior compared to my 2020 looks better, and has more soft touch surfaces. The 12” screen is cool, and the 360 camera is super clear. The steering wheel has a nice feeling, but I wonder about the life span of the alcantara leather. The driver seat felt good to the hand, but it was narrower and firmer than the driver seat in the Raptor. I was surprised that the seat in the TRX was not at least as comfortable as the seat in my Raptor.
On the road you notice the extra weight. The Hellcat does a good job pushing the truck, but you can’t hide the body roll. It feels planted, but the Raptor is more nimble/light feeling in the corners.
Overall, the TRX is one hell of a truck. Where I struggle is the price. My Raptor‘s sticker price was $74,000 (I paid $68,000), and a TRX with the same options is just shy of $90,000. My brain has a hard time processing that kind of money for a truck. My hope is that if I do decide to move onto a TRX, that we will see some discounted pricing in 2022. I guess only time will tell.
