Yep, called to get a brake fluid flush last week and told they aren't taking appointments. He said for "lack of workers"

Assistance service manager said they do drop-offs and will get to the car in order of drop-off. Will "probably" get to it the same day.

So, I went there at 0630 to be first in line for the 0800 opening, but discovered there were already 30 people waiting.

No, that didn't really happen, but they really aren't taking appointments. Their parking lot is tight - the spaces are close together. Won't be going there unless no other place to go.

Tire Discounters took my appointment.

Individual dealership problem of low morale and bad reputation among potential employees?

Or something going haywire in lots of places?

A bit of both? My dealer still makes appointments and caters to my OCD. However, my wife is the chair on the board of a non-profit child care facility. Six local child cares have had to close because they can’t get workers. Her’s is still open and has a long waiting list, but can’t accept new students for the same reason and could have to close. People don’t want to work.

I know of 3 kennels/rescues (myself included) that have been looking for staff the last 3 months with no takers.
PPL don't want to work and are being paid well to sit at home.
In FL, the fed extra unemployment $$ ends this week & we're all hoping that will change things. I expect since they will grudgingly come back to work, there will be high initial turnover and bad attitudes.

I’ve always heard that dealerships are scum to work for. They hire greenhorns out of school then quickly loose them once they get a little experience under their belt.

For 15 months now I have been on a constant search for good people to hire, for multiple positions. Hired 5 in this time period, but actually need 6 more. Finally on Sunday I interviewed a great lady, hired her, and she began working immediately. So far I am really impressed with the new girl.

People still make damn good money on unemployment
Now the child tax credit set to take effect in July.

Why work when the gubmint gives it to you for free?

We have a labor problem too. But the powers that be don't want to raise their rates. Meanwhile, I am seeing box stores, fast food places etc all offering $14+ an hour. Pretty hard to convince someone to work in a factory when they can be in A/C all day long for similar pay.

But ultimately, we gotta stop paying people to sit at home. COVID threat is pretty much gone. Be an adult get vaccinated or don't. Choice is yours but you can no longer hide behind it.

Lots of good comments besides yours, but I wanted to say I heard a radio commentator say that a $15/hour job is comparable to the unemployment, plus stimulus, income...but the government assistance isn't taxed.

So a net gain for opting for unemployment, he said. Governments relaxed the requirement to show if you're on unemployment you're actively seeking a job while the pandemic was in full swing. That is changing too as things open up.

Workers who work? Really, look for a Unicorn you’ll probably find one of them first. Even the workers who are at work and have worked through this have lost the will to work, everyone just wants to sit and play on their phones all day, eat chips, and get fat-er.

I won't get into which dealership told me about their labor shortage, but in two years they are on their third service manager. They told me a few months ago they didn't have an SRT-certified mechanic after their last one left. Maybe the top management is at fault. One would think a dealership would offer some benefits and some job/income security, but maybe working elsewhere is better.

Many dealerships constantly try and up-sell repairs that aren't needed - the repair shop is their bread and butter and brings in more income than selling cars. I'm feeling optimistic. Maybe dealerships can't keep people because top managements keep pressuring them to commit fraud.

One can hope.

So historically the decision to not work results in poverty. Once that reality is reestablished people are going to sober up.

I heard one comic do a routine about how many younger people have been raised in relative luxury, and as a result think about their own recreational desires ahead of their employment. He talked about how a small company owner got a big manufacturing order mid-week - and he told his employees about how he'd need some help on Saturday to fulfill the order. The response was along the lines of, "I've got a date.", or "Going to the amusement park", so, "No, thanks."

And the comic's punch line was that the company owner should have said something like, "You don't understand. When you come here and work hard and do a great job that just means I'm prepared to let you come back here tomorrow and do another great job. That is your reality."

I'm not advocating a return to draconian turn of the century unfettered capitalism where workers were little more than economic slaves, but working for a living should offer its own rewards. Psychological as well as physical.

Captain John White of the Jamestown settlement, “He that will not work shall not eat.” Saved the colony. Wonder how that would go over, today.

A lot of local fast food places are having to close doors because no one wants to work. I’ve heard news that a couple of my favorite mom and pop places back home have had to do the same. It’s kind of sad.

I’ve had to lose quite a few friends due to the childhood mentality that’s grown in this pandemic. So many friends have quit their jobs or just not gone back due to the unemployment payments.

So many people want me to just quit and do my own thing so I can hang out all day and be a bum on society’s couch. But I’m here daily, working my butt off. Hoping that it’s gonna lead somewhere. And if it doesn’t, I’ll make my way.

Sad to say that I’ve lost friends over me not wanting to quit my work and travel and play around. I’m doing my own thing. I’m struggling with my own bills but I’m working to pay them with my own money. Not some handouts.

Gotta stay working to get ahead, right?

The Great Depression is upon us and yeh uh huh I am nuts yep. Its always radical one way to the next and can guarantee people will be lined up looking for JOBS sooner than many think is possible. ASKS ME HOW I KNOW......I opened a brand new business a lawn and garden equipment trailer dealership April of 2007. And OMG what incredible terrible timing being the CRASH was on the doorstep but I did not know. I could not find workers and those I found had to pay premium. The HOUSING market was INSANE, Boat dealers, RV dealers, Motorcycle Dealers, Contractors, Help wanted everywhere. And WOW beyond WOW the lights turn off the fall of 2007 turned off and by 2008 the country was going in reverse and by 2009 the countries Banks, Auto and others were filling Bankruptcy left and RIGHT. And wow people were begging for JOBS and the Government was now bailing out the Financial infrastructures of the country. But oh yeh that cant ever happen again RIGHT....Uh huh better start stashing CASH sooner than LATER.....ASK ME HOW I KNOW😳

@Finface, I hate to hear that.

I do have an opposite story. The dealer I use has a staff of old farts like us! I visited them all during the fake Pandemic and they all were working. Still are and are happy as ever. I am picking up a certain Redeye TOMORROW, could have today, but I am busy! I have to give a great shout out to Dodge and Bloomington CJDR in the Twin Cities for making one of the most difficult situations that could happen to a car we can imagine work for a customer. Not all dealers suck.

I got my 11 year old into mowing a couple of easy lawns each week over the summer when his soccer season/camps conclude.

He used to beg for Fortnite money. Told him to use his own and buy gift cards at the store. He did it once and realized how stupid/wasteful it was. He no longer has a desire to buy the latest outfits etc in that game.

My daughter is prepping for a lemonade stand when my MIL's neighborhood has their annual garage sale. She wants a new American Girl doll.

One thing I have noticed, they take better care of the stuff they bought than stuff they were given.
Start em young and they will be fine. Problem is many adults never learned this. So you have entitled kids raising entitled kids.

Or "“Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”, John F. Kennedy, who wouldn't get elected dogcatcher as a Democrat today.

I'm more liberal/progressive/democrat than most on the majority of car sites I am on. And I will tell you this, that party on the left is off the rails.
Joe Manchin has been a saving grace to not allow them full power to do whatever the hell they want in Biden's first 2 years.
