Just thinking out loud here as an old drag racer...Are all the failures that have occurred to date, from engines that were drag raced? Have any 100% street driven 170's blow up yet? Is this an oil starvation issue from the pickup getting uncovered and sucking air during acceleration? After all, this is reputedly the quickest accelerating, internally combusted, factory stock vehicle in history. Are the G-forces shoving all the oil to the back of the pan during those wheelies? Does the Demon engine using the same oil pan and pump the "regular" 797/807 hp engine used?
It probably needed a dry sump oiling system on it like the old Z06's had from GM.
But end of a generation and if you believe that it was a totally "covert ops" from inside Dodge/Stellantis, then such things were probably scratched in the name of time savings.

Heard someone mention dry sump system on the 170?
No it's a regular old fashioned pump and pickup in the pan style.

If oil starvation was a cause, wouldn't the low oil pressure code be set and a resulting low oil pressure warning on the dash? I'd also expect oil pressure problems in logs?

There are a bunch out there running on the track. Look at Demonology, he's racing his all the time it seems. Hopefully mine's a good one.

I honestly don't know.
A bunch of shit post COVID seems to have quality issues.
GM has a bunch of engines with bad lifters.

Toyota Iforce Max people cry about oil starvation issues with their engines.

It has a warranty, go race it.

There are new videos as of two days ago. They state 11 have blown engines and 7 are now being analyzed for the same. The videos point to two possible reasons. Excessive pressure in cylinders and oil starvation. But the people making these videos are not engineers. I am sure Dodge will get to the bottom of this. I personally would not race the car until Dodge does release the cause and fix for such.
It's under warranty. Run it hard while there still is a dodge to replace it

I would say no. Jon has run in the 8's with a stock pan as have others

Redeye pan is baffled (supposedly) and would be the same one on the 170. I've never looked in side one. Jon may know for sure.

Jim had pictures of a redeye pan and a hellcat pan next to each other I don’t think I saved it. I can tell you valve covers are different as well

@jonx96

I ran a lengthy data log coming home from the cruise in the other night. This included a cold start, drive, and a couple of romps for good measure. I was curious what I'd see for misfires since there have been several reports.

Well....almost none over the nearly 42 minute drive. Mine was a later build. I'm almost wondering if some of the problems we've seen are from earlier build cars? RacerX's was 615 I believe.

His dealer ticket must have only been stamped once with VIP and not twice

As the current cylinder #8 misfire record holder it is comforting to find out that these are not issues just related to my car. The Hellcat sees about 26PSI of boost in good weather. Misfires are turned off.

Ugh, I need a new pan. Taking it off once and replacing the gasket while still in the car is enough for one lifetime for me though

Watching engine masters where they just gained 28 hp and 18 tq and improved oil pressure by A LOT by using a specialty windage oil pan and LESS oil

@fumanchu182 how are those misfire tables to be interpreted? Above those values sets a code or ? Is it cumulative or time based?
